Thursday, December 05, 2019

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas Department of Health, Sport & Exercise Sciences has selected Bernie Kish, lecturer in sport management and Robinson Center facilities director, as keynote speaker for this year’s James Naismith Lecture.

Kish’s lecture, “History of Health, Sport, and Exercise Sciences,” will take place at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, in the Capitol Federal Hall Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

“This is an important year for the department within our school, given the current name change transition efforts,” said Rick Ginsberg, dean of the School of Education. “Dr. Kish has written a considerable amount on the history of sports and athletics in the United States, and we are lucky to have him as this year’s presenter showcasing the history of the Department of Health, Sport & Exercise Sciences at KU.”

Prior to his role at KU, Kish spent 10 years serving as the first executive director of the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, Indiana. He also worked for KU Athletics from 1992 to 1995.

Kish earned a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, a master’s degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and a doctorate from KU. More information on Kish can be found here.

The James Naismith Lecture Series was established in the spring of 2008 to honor the legendary founder of the game of basketball and first chair of the department. Since the first lecture the department has hosted multiple lectures on topics including:

  • exercise physiology
  • sport psychology
  • sport management & administration
  • sports medicine
  • health & physical education
  • KU’s athletic history and tradition.

More information on the James Naismith Lecture Series can be found here.

The Department of Health, Sport & Exercise Sciences is housed in the School of Education, a nationally ranked school preparing educators and health/sport/exercise professionals as leaders. The school is in the process of changing its name to the School of Education & Human Sciences between now and fall 2020. More information on the name change can be found here.
